International Women's Day is March 8. It began in New York City in 1908 when socialist garment workers, fed up with intolerable sweatshop conditions, demonstrated in support of equal pay, childcare, an end to degrading working conditions and for the right to vote. Clara Zetkin, the leading German revolutionary feminist, was so moved by the heroism and struggles of these garment workers that she called upon the Socialist International to proclaim March 8 Working Women's Day. From then on, revolutionary feminists have supported International Working Women's Day as a tribute to women's stuggles of the past, to the movement of today and to our future victories.
